"The Minnesota Economic Trends magazine, published by DEED's Labor Market Information office, profiled the Minnesota micropolitan communities in its August issue. A micropolitan is a county with an urban cluster with a population between 10,000 and 50,000 people. "Owatonna is one of 17 micropolitans in Minnesota, and ranks second in bringing outside workers into its city. Almost 1,800 more people commute to Owatonna for work than leave for jobs outside the area. According to DEED statistics, the average wage in Steele County for the fourth quarter of 2005 was $636 a week. "'What it means is Owatonna is an employment center,' said Cameron Macht, regional labor market analyst for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). 'From a tax standpoint it makes the community stronger.' "Owatonna ranked 30th out of 500 cities in A.G. Edwards' Nest Egg Index, which was released earlier this month. The index scored communities in 12 different areas, including personal retirement savings, mortgage balances, home ownership, cost of living, employment rate and personal debt levels. "Owatonna was also recently named the 28th best "dreamtown" among micropolitan areas in the United States by Bizjournals, the online division of American City Business Journals."
